Exploring My Muslim Neighbor’s Faith

An introductory lecture series about Islam and its practice in America with Dr. Salih Sayilgan of Wesley Theological Seminary.

Term & Topics:
Lecture 1, March 31, 2019, 7:30pm – 9:00pm: The foundations of Islam: The Qur’an, the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad, and Shari’ah, the Islamic law. Interpreting the Qur’an, Islamic scripture, and its controversial verses. The role of the Prophet Muhammad in the life of Muslims and the meaning and practice of Shari’ah today. The section will also discuss the American context.

Lecture 2, April 7, 2019, 7:30pm – 9:00pm: The articles of faith in Islam. Exploring the existence of a Muslim God and the Muslim belief, if any, in the creation story. Islam’s position with regard to other religions: Who is saved? Are there angels? Are there a heaven and a hell? And how does Islam explain the existence of evil?

Lecture 3. April 14, 2019, 7:30pm – 9:00pm: What the daily life of a Muslim looks like. Living within the framework of the five pillars of Islam: testimony, daily prayers, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage and their practices in America.

Lecture 4, April 28, 2019, 7:30pm – 9:00pm: Exploring some of the controversial areas in Islam. The meaning of jihad. The status of Muslim women and religious minorities in Islam.

-This lecture series open to Muslims, and people of other faiths. Open to all age groups.

Bio of Lecturer:
Dr. Salih Sayilgan is Visiting Assistant Professor at Wesley Theological Seminary where he teaches courses on Islam and World Religions. He taught courses at the Catholic University of America and Georgetown University. Sayilgan also served as a residential chaplain at Georgetown University from 2010 to 2014.
